How to Test a Fencing Body Cord Before Competition

A body cord can look perfect in your fencing bag and still fail the moment you stretch into a lunge. The usual culprit is not dramatic damage. It is an intermittent connection: a conductor has started to break near a plug, a screw has loosened, or a dirty contact no longer makes a reliable electrical connection.

A five-minute check before leaving home is much easier than troubleshooting on the strip. This guide explains a practical routine for electric foil, épée, and saber body cords. It does not replace an event’s formal equipment control, but it can help you arrive with dependable spares and fewer surprises.

Start with the right tester

Use a fencing test box that accepts both ends of your body cord at the same time. That lets you test the cord by itself instead of adding a weapon or reel to the circuit. Make sure the tester is designed for your cord type, whether that is a three-prong cord used for épée or the two-prong or bayonet-style connection used for foil and saber.

Check the tester battery first. Dim indicators can make a brief flicker difficult to see. If you are learning the process, ask a coach or club armorer to demonstrate what a good reading looks like on your specific tester.

Inspect before you plug in

Uncoil the cord completely and look along its full length. Pay special attention to the strain-relief area where the flexible cable enters each rigid plug. USA Fencing’s equipment-repair guidance notes that this junction is a common place for body-cord wires to break.

Look for cuts, crushed insulation, exposed conductors, corrosion, bent prongs, a loose shell, or missing hardware. Gently check that visible connector screws are snug with the correct screwdriver, but do not overtighten them. If a plug is cracked, a conductor is exposed, or the connector cannot be secured, remove the cord from use until it is properly repaired or replaced.

Test every conductor end to end

Plug both ends into the appropriate inputs and confirm each conductor produces the expected steady indication. Follow the tester manufacturer’s instructions because light patterns vary. The important result is continuity through every line, with no signal crossing onto the wrong line.

Do not stop after seeing the correct lights once. A cord that works while lying still may fail during fencing. Keep watching the tester while you flex the cable gently near both plugs, move it up and down, and sweep it in a small circle. Then run your hand along the cable and repeat the movement at several points. USA Fencing advises testing cords in multiple directions and treating even a faint flicker as evidence of an intermittent fault.

Use controlled bends, not sharp kinks or hard pulling. The goal is to reproduce normal motion, not stress a healthy cord until it breaks.

What a flicker usually tells you

A light that cuts out when the cable moves near one plug often points to a conductor breaking at that connector. A reading that changes when the plug itself moves may indicate a loose prong, screw, or contact. A constant wrong reading can suggest crossed conductors after a previous repair.

Test the body cord separately before blaming the weapon, reel, or scoring machine. If the cord passes by itself, add one component at a time. This simple isolation method keeps you from changing several things at once and makes the actual fault easier to identify.

Clean contacts carefully

Dirt and oxidation can interfere with electrical contact. With the cord fully disconnected, wipe accessible metal contacts with a clean, lint-free swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, then allow them to dry completely before testing again. Do not soak the plug, scrape plated surfaces aggressively, or use oily household sprays that can leave residue.

If cleaning restores the reading only temporarily, assume there is still a mechanical or wiring problem. Reliable equipment should stay reliable while the cord moves.

Repair, replace, or ask an armorer?

Many connector-end faults can be repaired with basic tools, but a correct repair requires identifying each conductor and reassembling the plug in the proper orientation. A crossed line can create a cord that appears complete but does not behave correctly. If you are not confident reading the tester or wiring diagram, label the faulty cord and give it to an experienced armorer.

Never keep an intermittent cord in the same pocket as your working cords. Mark it clearly so it cannot return to circulation by accident. A repaired cord should pass the full stationary and movement test before it goes back into a competition bag.

Pack redundancy, not hope

USA Fencing’s parent guidance lists a minimum of two working body cords for competition. Treat that as a starting point, then check the current event requirements and your coach’s recommendations. Both cords should be tested before packing; an untested spare is only a second question mark.

Coil cords loosely instead of wrapping them tightly around a plug or cramming them beneath heavy equipment. Store them dry, keep connector ends protected from grit, and avoid using the cable itself to pull a plug free. Grip the connector body when disconnecting it.

A simple pre-event routine

  1. Install a fresh tester battery if the indicators are weak.
  2. Inspect the cable, strain reliefs, plugs, prongs, and screws.
  3. Connect both ends and verify every conductor.
  4. Flex the cable gently in multiple directions while watching for flicker.
  5. Clean dirty contacts, dry them fully, and retest.
  6. Label any questionable cord and keep it out of the working set.
  7. Pack at least two cords that have passed the complete test.

Body cords are small compared with a mask, jacket, or weapon, but the scoring system depends on them. Test them under movement, carry verified spares, and deal with intermittent readings at the workbench—not at the start of your bout.
