Beginner Fencing Gear Checklist

Your first fencing kit should cover protection, weapon compatibility, and enough spares to keep practice moving. Start with the items your coach requires, then upgrade as your training schedule and competition plans become clear.

Essential protective gear

Most beginner fencers need a mask, jacket, glove, underarm protector, fencing pants or knickers, long socks, and athletic court shoes. Many youth programs also require a plastic chest protector.

  • Fencing mask fitted securely to the head
  • Jacket with enough room for lunging and arm extension
  • Underarm protector, also called a plastron
  • Weapon-hand glove with no gaps around the cuff
  • Knickers or fencing pants plus knee-length socks
  • Indoor court shoes with stable lateral support

Weapon and electric setup

For non-electric beginner classes, the club may provide weapons. Once a fencer starts electric practice, match the weapon, body cord, mask cord, and conductive lame to the discipline.

  • Foil: foil, body cord, foil lame, mask cord, and foil mask when required
  • Epee: epee, body cord, and epee-compatible mask
  • Sabre: sabre, body cord, sabre lame, mask cord, and sabre mask

Useful extras

A few simple accessories make training easier and protect the investment in the kit.

  • Fencing bag with space for mask, uniform, and weapon
  • Spare glove and spare body cord for electric fencing
  • Small towel, water bottle, and breathable base layer
  • Name labels for club or team equipment rooms

FAQ

Common questions

Should I buy everything before the first class?

Not always. Many clubs lend masks and weapons for trial classes. Buy personal protective gear once you know the club requirements and weapon discipline.

What is the first upgrade after a basic kit?

For regular training, most fencers upgrade fit-critical pieces first: glove, mask, shoes, and weapon setup.
