Youth fit

Youth Fencing Equipment Size Guide

Youth fencing gear should leave room for movement and modest growth without becoming loose or unstable. A secure fit is especially important for masks, gloves, and protective layers.

Measurements to take

Use a flexible tape measure and record both inches and centimeters when possible. Measure over a thin shirt, not over bulky clothing.

  • Height for jacket, pants, and protector reference
  • Chest and waist for jacket and knicker fit
  • Hip measurement for fencing pants or knickers
  • Head circumference for mask sizing
  • Hand circumference for glove sizing

Where growth room is acceptable

A little extra length in clothing is manageable if the garment does not restrict footwork or blade arm movement.

  • Jacket sleeves can be slightly long if the cuff stays controlled
  • Pants can have modest extra room at the waist with proper closure
  • Chest protectors should cover correctly without shifting

Where fit must be precise

Some equipment should not be oversized because it can move during fencing or interfere with control.

  • Mask should not rock, slide, or lift when the fencer moves
  • Glove fingertips should not have excess material
  • Shoes should lock the heel and support side-to-side movement

FAQ

Common questions

How often should youth gear be rechecked?

Check fit at the start of each season and after visible growth spurts. Mask, glove, and chest protector fit should be checked more often.

Should parents buy adult sizes for growth?

Only if the adult size still fits securely. Oversized equipment can make fencing awkward and may not protect as intended.
